Alright, new/olbie first post, yadda yadda. I have a Riolu and I'm having a #@$% of a time trying to figure out it's EVs. Psypoke's calculator is just giving me "Invalid stats" error on ANY Pokémon I put in and Serebii.net's doesn't have the D/P Pokémon in it yet, so would someone be kind enough to help me with the math on this?
Mohan - Riolu - lvl. 1 Nature: Timid Characteristic: Good Perserverence HP - 11 ATK- 5 (-) DEF- 6 (+) SP.ATK.- 5 SP.DEF.- 5 SPD.- 6 (+)
I know I'm taking a hit on her ATK already from her Nature, but Protiens and EV training should balance that out..? I mean, if the IV/DV thing works out.
...or am I going to have to train her up past level 1 first, before I can get into any of this? I hate feeling this incompetent, ~.~

Yeah, it's basically impossible to get an IV reading on a Pokemon at level 1. If you have some Rare Candies, you could boost it up to a higher level, check the stats, and then reset (so you don't lose the Candies).
There's an IV/stat calculator here. Meowth346 used to have one on his page that could compare the stats over five Rare Candies to accurately calculate the IVs quicker, but I don't know where it would be now that his page is gone.

Ah alright. Thanks for the link. I don't have that many Rare Candies to use to boost her stats, but I can probably level her a bit with Wild Pokémon and then reset that way.
To return the favor (I cross posted this cry for help across a few different forums), someone posted this : http://www.Pokémon.net/javacalc.html
It's been insanely useful for checking my other team members and it can also calculate the Hidden Power of a Pokémon.
Thanks again!

I've been using this IV calculator, which lets you calculate across an arbitrary number of levels. There's also an offline program version of all his stuff, though the only version updated for DP is the IV calculator.
You can't really balance out bad natures with EVs - sure, you can dump lots of EV into one stat to try to make up for it, but then you just use up EVs that you could've otherwise used on other stats or to boost that stat on top of a good nature. It's better IMO to breed for a good nature; with a Ditto that has the nature you want and an attached Everstone, you have a 50% chance of passing that nature. I'm not sure that it works with a Ditto and a female though, so you might have to do one breeding round to get a male and then breed a ditto with the preferred nature with that, Everstone attached.
The cool thing to do these days regarding IVs seems to be "IV battles" on wifi in which people pick a lv100 equalizing match, check all their ordinarily lv1 guys to get exact IVs and then run to avoid a win/loss.

Huh, I've never heard of the Evertsone thing in breeding. Thanks for the tip.
I don't know how serious I'm wanting to go yet with the EVs thing... I'm still only 4 Badges into Diamond, so any breeding will mostly wait until I can trasfer a Ditto over from my FR cart. I've been doing the research, mostly for my own sake, if I ever want to start doing battles over the WiFi with people. Heh, I'm almost longing for the days of Red/Blue, just because all I had to worry about then was getting a decent set of stats and training up from there... All of the DV/EV/IV things are really throwing me for a loop. I'm very impressed with the kids who can keep up with all of it, ^_^;;

Is all this breeding and stuff actually fun? I can see the entertainment value in trying to optimize your team and figure out the best possible stats and such for a given species, but how does it play out in the game?
Are there just hours of mindless farming? I must have spent 24 hours of game time looking for a decent Koffing in RBY and I never got one with decent stats. It wasn't anything like fun.

No, it's basically just grind. I mostly just get a pokemon of the species I want and toss it in with a Ditto of the nature I want while I'm running around doing other stuff; after popping out half a dozen eggs or so I hatch them and take whatever has the appropriate nature and the best IVs. I get around 20 average IV that way, which is good enough for me.
You do have a degree of control over the process, with the 50% nature passing and three random stats' IVs passed from the parents (three others random 0-31), but it's still sufficient grinding for luck with a sufficiently low impact on actual competition that I can't be bothered to really push for high stats. Creating movesets and teams is a lot more relevant and a lot more interesting.
Also if you're not up on how things've worked the past few gens, now instead of statexp there're "EVs" which are basically 127 points you assign to your pokemon's stats at your discretion based on the enemy species you have them fight (level doesn't matter). There's also a variety of EV-boosting items which effectively mean you can max them out in a handful of trainer battles if you pick the right ones. [ 05-12-2007, 12:08 AM: Message edited by: Rolken ]

How do items work this time around?
Do I still have to restart the entire game just to get another Thunderbolt TM? And PP UPs?

Most heavy hitter TMs (including tbolt/icebeam/flamethrower) are obtainable if expensive, but yeah, there's a lot of TMs that aren't. But ultimately it's not really a big deal due to the field-tested moron method:
<Rolken> hay guys who wants to trade TM76 for a feebas!?
I've also obtained all of the legendary trio, Cresselia, and basically everything short of event pogeys for a Feebas from hapless Feebaslovers.
There's also a bug in the internet trading service that can be exploited to clone pokemon (and attached items), if inconsistently.
PP Ups aren't buyable, but you can get one a day from the lotto; it's a 1/100 chance per trainer IDs, but it's really easy to get a lot of trainer IDs through random trading (and feebas!) and you can reset if you don't get lucky.

The problem is still that I'm just not that interested. I can't imagine the plot is clever enough to hold my attention, and the only reason I got into Pokemon in the first place is that I really liked the show's innovative premise.
Now that I haven't seen the show in years (and doubt I could be convinced to watch any of it), I don't have any vested interest in favorite Pokemon.
I'm not sure what it would take to make me play the game, but it'd definitely have to be computer- or sofa console-based and I'd need some trick to care about hundreds of species I've never heard of.
I still have my unopened Pokemon Gold package somewhere and I never even finished Silver. I played the hell out Snap, though.
