It's up to Category 5, isn't it?
Hope your freezer's empty, 'cause your food is probably gonna reek after the power comes back on.
And speaking as someone who went through a hurricane last year, an SP makes a great emergency flashlight.

Incidentally, it'll probably be the strongest hurricane ever to hit Kennedy Space Center - stronger than many of the shuttle-related buildings are built to withstand.
I wonder if that's good or bad.

Yeah, I was on the outer banks (North Carolina, itty bitty strip of islands) when the last one went through... That was only like a 2 or somethin, and still just about the scariest thing ever, good luck with this shit.

The worst part is, with Charley having come through not too long ago, there is still debris all over the place (at least where I live.) When this bitch comes through, all that stuff is going to be picked up and hurled for "It's a Critical Hit!" damage. There are these dumping ground where all the debris that was removed got dumped, and anyone who lives within 5 miles is supposed to evacuate. I live within a 5 mile radius of 3 of them >.< Wish me luck...

It never made it to Cat 5, as far as I know. Lately it's been going from 3 to 2 and back...it's just squatting on us.
Sucks.
Two trees down and counting...
Let's hope the trailer park is still there next year...perhaps the ants will defend it...

So you had Charley last month, have Frances now, and apparently Ivan (a Category 3) is on its way.
Is some supreme being damning you for the 2000 election or something?
Posted by JohtoMaster (Member # 1023) on 09-05-2004, 07:57 PM:
I don't know, but in the past 6 years that I have lived in Florida, there hasn't been a single major hurricane to hit Florida (except Bonnie, but that was only, like, a Cat 1). Now we have three big ones in such a short span... I blame El Nino, which, incase you didn't know, is Spanish for "The Nino."

Lost another tree.
Had the surreal experience of playing Super Monkey Party with my father.
Neighbors had much more damage than we did.
Antenna blew off my car (also what).
Pelted by fronds.
I give it 3 out of 4 stars.
Needed more whores.
Shudders remain in place for Ivan's visit next weekend.
Will make Dad play the monkey again.
Now I get to go home and see what's left.

Home...home is where you wear your hat.
Anyway, it's mostly dry, the satellite dish has been re-aligned, the TiVo has been rebooted and reruns have been programmed in, and almost all my favorite trees survived.
Also there is some cool damage down the street that doesn't affect me.

Posted by Donald (Member # 1551) on 09-24-2004, 10:34 PM:
Officially, it ends on October 31st.
Unofficially, it's entirely possible that you could get one the first Tuesday in November. And considering the counties that have been hit are the same counties that voted Bush in 2000, it might be a good thing (no offense).

November 31st is the official end of the hurricane season. Usually there isn't much activity, if any, in November. Typically October sees the last storms of any note. Hurricane Mitch was a November hurricane. Sometimes storms will even form in December...it's just really rare.
I've had a closet obsession with the Weather Channel since I was like 5.

OK, this one finally got us...

My neighborhood:

Also 90% of the traffic lights are out in this town. 80% of us don't have power.
But everyone is very happy that the eMpTy Vee Music Awards are going on. Because, y'know, who needs hot water when Diddy is gettin' it on?
The cruelest trick was that I walked 1.5 miles to the Long John Silver's...I could smell the chicken planks...but the dining room was closed and they wouldn't let me walk thru. So, I went back for the car (after scouting streets without trees and lakes in the middle of them) and those fuckers were closed. Assholesassholesassholes.
Taking a man's chicken planks is not a laughing matter.
So, anyway, I found a shitty sub shop that was open. Sucked.
OK, maybe it was slightly crueller that the tree in my front yard decided to smash the sideview mirror on my car. Last year, some dumbass bicyclist smashed into my car (while I was waiting at a red light) and smashed the same mirror.
The world hates that mirror.
Still, my home is intact, which is more than I can say for some of my neighbors, so I ain't complainin'.
Well, except for that chicken plank thing.
(Also, aphid, if you want to post non-poop, be our guest.)

I don't want to go home because the electrons there are lazy.
Also I forgot to mention that there was an actual carp in the park near my place. The lake overflowed and he was swimming around on the lawn, frightening the children.

Now that I have power back, the hurricane is interesting voyeuristic entertainment again.
But, yeah, I almost feel bad about bitching about this thing, given that New Orleans is about to become Lake New Orleans.
Also I got a better picture. This is a little bit before I left work for home and got to see trees fall down in front of me and stuff. Right after this, Katrina did exactly the opposite of what all the forecasters said it would do, and came right for me:

Thanks...a friend of mine has family in the suburbs of NO and maybe they can tell if they still have a house.
Also in South Florida, you can't build wooden structures. (Those wood and paper things in Japan seem totally weird to me, as do homes up in the northern US.) The building code (which I'm sure cflakkin objects to) requires that you build things out of cinderblock and there are other rules about how the roof is secured and such.
I'll bet they implement something like that in Mississippi now that all the wooden homes on the coastline have been scoured away.

Katrina's a beautiful name. Too bad it will be associated with death, destruction, lawlessness, a breakdown of society, and racial unrest for quite some time.

Wilma has gone absolutely insane. Less than 24 hours ago it was a tropical storm, and now it's a Cat5 hurricane. In NHC terms an average pressure drop of 5 millibars across 6 hours is considered "explosive deepening"; Wilma dropped 10mb average across 8 hours and is apparently the 2nd-5th strongest on record depending on what you read.
They're forecasting a strong Cat3 at landfall, but in light of their wind speed forecast a few hours before they declared a Cat5 (which predicted borderline Cat2/3 at present and 10% chance of Cat5 in 24-48 hours), grain of salt required.
