I've heard of people loosing thier pokemon, games being deleted, and plenty of other nasty surprises... But then again I've heard it work perfectly for some people. I don't like to screw around with my game, so I don't clone pokemon...

If you time it right - Nothing can go wrong...
I did it plenty of times w/ my sister's cartridge copying over 20+ mewtwos...
I wasn't paying attention one time though and turned her game off at the wrong time and deleted the memory... luckily all of the clones where on my game so nothing important was lost (She was planning on restarting anyways and was afraid I would yell at her if she did)

Cloning is cool provided you have a game pak you don't mind seeing deleted. In my experience even if you mess up and delete the game pak on the left the Pokemon you were trying to clone and the game pak on the right will still be safe. If you're cloning several different Pokemon only keep one on the left game pak at a time since a purge will wipe out those other Pokemon you haven't cloned yet. A Mega Mem Card is safer but if you don't want to spend enough money to buy a new game pak then cloning works just as well provided you pay attention.

I've cloned pokémon loads of times using the link cable and I haven't had one problem. Just make sure you time it right and you shouldn't have any trouble.

Is the one on the left giving or receiving the clone?

The one on the left (the left side trader always goes first) is the one sending the Pokemon to be cloned.

Another thought I had yesterday while looking at Game Boy accessories is that using a Mega Memory Card is technically illegal by NOA standards. In America you can legally use in game cheats (ie MissingNo, linked cloning) but using a Mega Mem Card is using an outside gaming device (like GameShark) and thus is illegal by NOA tournament standards. I doubt Nintendo could catch you unless you did it in their face but it is another thing to consider.

BTW, my Wal*Mart was selling the Mega Mem Cards for $20 (they retail for $25) so check your own store if you really want one since they might be on sale.

Megamem rocks, period.

Illegal? It sure might be. But it doesn't give you any capabilities that owning lots of the games wouldn't.

IIRC, Nintendo's rule say that you can't "use a Pokemon that has been modified with a game-altering device." Since MegaMem doesn't "alter" the Pokemon, it should be technically legal.
