I ask because a person could trade you a pokemon with legit stats and attacks but still be gamesharked...

no it reads as if a normal poke, but without the sharked ablitity to erase your game. once traded the game doesnt't know it was sharked. this is with some codes, others when boxed will revert to oringal stats

If you shark stats (not stat EXP, genes) you can trade it, just like that. Boxing it will have the usual effects (takes it back to normal values).

At least, I'm pretty sure I remember that...

Shark the stat EXP and max stats and the pokémon is still effectively unsharked: it's entirely legal, both externally (has legal range for stats) and internally (structure set up properly).
