Today I've been experimenting with the MissingNo. trick as a means of maybe getting a Mew without a Gameshark. No luck yet though. Any comments from sharking experts or people who know the MissingNo. trick are welcome.

I've only been able to get Level 0 and Level 80 'M pokemon, level 80 MissingNo. pokemon, and Level 146 MissingNo. pokemon. All my pokemon except the Level 146 MissingNo. would evolve into Kanghaskan if I give them a rare candy. A MissingNo. FAQ mentioned you can get Rhyhorn and other pokemon sometimes from evolved 'M or MissingNo. pokemon, but I couldn't get them.

Another code also said you can get Level 100+ pokemon using this trick, however I followed their directions and could only get a Level 146 MissingNo. pokemon. The code made it sound like you could get Level 100+ regular pokemon, which you could then use in real battles.

Using the same code I was able to fight Safari Zone pokemon and capture them easily, as well as any other wild pokemon you ever see while playing the game.

Anyone know anything special about the MissingNo. code that might help? As I understand it, you need to see the Old Pokeball Man or trade pokemon with CPU trainers to cause MissingNo.'s to appear. Would trading pokemon with different CPU trainers cause different MissingNo.'s to appear (maybe so if I gave them rare candy they would evolve into a Mew instead of a Kanghaskan)? I'll test this later on. How about if you traded some pokemon with another human trainer?

AFAIK, when given a rare candy, 'M turns into Kangaskahn, and when he is traded to yellow (I think) he turns into rhydon. Of course, besides getting 'Ms and Missongnos, you'll also be fighting other pokemon (on my blue cartridge i have lvl 147 magnemites). These pokemon are directly related to the OT name and the Rival name. It's all hexadecimal stuff I dont know about.

no, mew is not one of the pokemon you can get through the old man trick without giving your character a gamesharked name.

to test if any pokemon can be gotten normally through the old man trick, put in the code 01??58D1 and see if the first letter of your character's name is a 'normal' letter.

using a gameshark, you can, however, permanently change any red/blue cartridge into an infinite supply of mew's. here's the note from jdonald's faq:

01??60D1
- Able to catch the pokemon of your choice using the old man trick.
Save your game to permanently make the pokemon catchable on your game.
Read about Missingno in other FAQ's if you don't know what the old man
trick is.

Anthrax, I didn't get to see any super high level regular pokemon, oh well. I'll try again. But, if you can really get super high level pokemon like that, maybe you could use them in a real tournament and kick ass? What happens if you put your Level 147 Magnemite in a box and then take him out again? My Level 146 MissingNo. remained at Level 146, I think. So they would be valid tournament pokemons! o_O

Cheater, wow, thanks for all that info. I'll play around with it now. I did see that jdonald's faq and that code 01xx60D1 but when I put it in, nothing changed. What about the 01xx58D1 code? Why are there two different codes, I'm confused.

------------------

Posted by Porcupine (Member # 46) on 05-17-2000, 07:44 PM:

Hey Anthrax I tested that stuff, you were right. I got level 153 Starmie. The level is also determined by letters in your name, as well as the pokemon species. These pokemon will be normal and know normal attacks, and in addition they can be put into a box and removed and keep their level. They can be Rare Candied up to level 255 too. But the FAQs were right if you gain any EXP with them they will revert to level 100. Still, possibly tournament valid, since they do survive the boxing process.

Cheater, your code worked great. The 01xx60D1 code actually worked too, I guess I didn't hunt long enough last time. But I am wondering, what memory location does 01xx60D1 refer to anyway? It's obvious that 01xx58D1 refers to the first letter of your name, and 01xx59D1 the second letter, etc. Also, your code does NOT work when you use the Trade Pokemon trick instead of the Old Man trick (both followed by Surfing on the coast)....maybe there is more potential in investigating the Trade Pokemon version of the MissingNo. trick?

I have known about the +100 PKMN for awhile...I even made a list of PKMN it's possible to get there...I had the same idea as you (i.e. finding Mew) but it seems like he doesn't pop up there. These are the PKMN I have seen people catch there (and I think this is it, because everyone seems to have these same ones):

Starmie
Aerodactyl (!)
Haunter
Magnemite
Ponyta
Rapidash
Mewtwo (!)
Muk
Clefable (save a moon stone...)
Electrode
Marowak
Golduck
Kingler
Blastoise (!)
Squirtle (!)
Snorlax (!)

That's about it, there may be some more I'm forgetting...

OK, I checked and the max length of your name is 7 characters. The last character of your name is usually a special <End> marker character (dunno what the hex value is though). If the programmers still use a <End> marker even when your name is the maximum length, that means they reserve 8 characters of memory for your name. The memory location 01xx58D1 is the 1st letter of your name, so 01XX60D1 is the 9th letter, which means it shouldn't be in your name, just like mlmiddleton said. But, if it's not in your name, shouldn't that memory location be used for another purpose, or did they just waste a space in memory?

Also, I am wondering what memory space would affect the Trade Pokemon version of the MissingNo. trick, since your name doesn't seem to.

Nice list Mecha-A, ya you can only get some pokemon corresponding to possible letters, I dunno exactly which ones. Probably around 50 different ones I would guess (26 letters of alphabet x upperlowercase).

Here's something funny though. Try naming yourself ??????? then on the Old Man MissingNo. trick you will fight a trainer from TEAM ROCKET! Too bad you cannot capture him because being a trainer he blocks your pokeball. The game will also be really screwed up.

oh, yes, and SOMETHING really weird...

Okay. Name is "Wally T." (Don't ask). I do MISSINGNO trick. I fight my RIVAL...he has 6 PKMN, including two male nidoran, a glitched-name nidoran, a MISSINGNO, a jolteon, and a nidorino. He brings out MISSINGNO...I use Blizzard. It misses. He uses SELF-DESTRUCT. He explodes...

My GB goes haywire. My screen glitches, and lines start moving from upper left to lower right, diagonally. The music messes up. My Pokemon's picture glitches, and my GB screen turns off.

I reset game, and my saved data is gone.

Whaddaya think?

Clearly, he used the Fire attack BATTERY BURN.

It has a 10% chance of wiping your data.

Seriously though, I'm pretty sure it is possible for a move to result in a jump to another part of memory. Once that occurs, many opcode that make no sense are executed. This will continue until:

(1) Power is gone.
(2) It finds an infinite loop.
(3) It does something to the hardware that makes it unable to run any more software (not always applicable)

A lot of what it does it to modify memory and registers. All that you care about is memory, as the registers are immediately trashed. Since I'm pretty sure the save RAM can be accessed as normal RAM, and so can the video array, blasting random data into random spots can result in exactly what you saw... still it sucks.

Your rival finally got at you. You've gotta watch those BIRDs...

Sorry, you must have got unlucky, Mecha-A.

I would have done the same as you, I'd keep my gameboy on hoping to discover some evil glitches rather than turn it off to safeguard my saved game.

I've glitched my game numerous times but never lost anything. I'm using no$gmb emulator though, but I dunno if it makes any difference.

BTW, the Crash the game on purpose with a Flying Forever Transforming Mew in VS link battle mode only crashes one side technically...the other guy's side I think!! =D Your side will just say Waiting... forever cause the other guy's gameboy has a messed up screen filled with weird characters and crap.

It doesn't crash right away though, it just desynchs the game. Im still too busy to investigate it further, but it does need more investigating probably. I might do it later. The most hopeful thing is that it will technically only crash the other guy's gameboy and not yours. From what I've seen so far that IS the case in all situations with this bug...I still dunno if tournament officials would let you win with it though. I have no idea what they'd do...anyone think they know?

i know why the pokemon over lv. 100 glitch happens.
when you talk to the old man, your name temporaraly becomes 'old man', and your name is stored in the 'catch these pokemon' variables.
i have been compiling a similar list myself.

Presumably nothing. If you don't talk to the old man first your character's name isn't copied to the memory bytes that determine wild pokemon, so you'd just run into pokemon from whatever area you were last in.

To Mecha-A - Holy crap! My trainer name is "Karl T." (my name IRL) and I experience the same thing from time to time when I do the missingno trick. The first time it happened my instincts told me to turn the game off immediately, and after hearing your story I'm glad I did.

It must have something to do with the space or the period in the name. Any thoughts?

no clue.

lance, your list is flawed. the letters you have listed as "Missingno" dont turn up missingno. for example, H gets Nidorino.
also what would happen if you only had one letter in your name.
if the 3rd, 5th, and 7th letters affect it, why does the name "BLUE" give you starmie, abra and golduck?
