I was really curious if the Japanese players had as much information as we do (this thought was from cfalcon IIRC in an older post), so I went onto a Japanese html chat room, and here's what happened:

Me: I bought pokemon stadium (i don't like how the sleep rules were changed), its pretty cool. I'm not sure what pokemon vention is though

aminisi: in reds,FGT is very difficult to use. Hitmolee often down one attack.

Me: Another bad thing about FGT is that PSY attacks are strong against it, and all FGT types have low Special, so its really weak (but can still deal good damage) In gold/silver, evil is strong against psychic, and there are good bug attacks, so Metwo is a little easier to defeat.

but can't use if u dont know japanese pokemon name.

At this point something happened, and whenever I tried logging in and speaking, I was moved to another room, so I gave up. Oh well, at least I got a bunch of info (but its useless if no one can translate it). So obviously the players in Japan know much more than what cfalcon thought. Now if anyone here can translate Japanese, that'd be great, because then the secret of breeding would be unlocked, and I'm sure the other Japanese sites have some good info.

TeamPA's lightyears ahead of AH on research. A lot of what's explained on AH is basic stuff for good Japanese websites about Pokémon.

Offhand, I can't think of what type of knowledge they have that AH doesn't have, but I will say that they do have all formulas in the game, from damage formulas, to PokéBall catching formulas. Again, all the basics.
Actually, without TeamPA, I wouldn't have discovered Gameshark codes for editing the maps in Pokémon as soon as I did.

There's some amazingly fascinating stuff at that Pokemon Analysis site -- stuff just begging to be translated. It's all for Gold and Silver, of course, but some of it would at least be a good jumping-off point for research here.

For instance, did you know that different Pokemon have inherently different chances of being caught? As near as I can tell, this is the formula they've found for chance of catching any given Pokemon in G/S:

(((((4*Max HP) - (2*Current HP)) * Capture Factor)/Max HP) + Status Bonus + 1)/256.

Now, the Status Bonus is simple: +10 if the Pokemon is Sleeping or Frozen, and +5 if it is Paralyzed, Poisoned, or Burned. But the Capture Factor takes into account both the type of Pokeball and the 'Lure Factor' (an inexact translation) inherent to each Pokemon.

Lure Factor can be found on their Pokemon Statistics page, along with such things as the base value of each stat and so forth. Caterpie, for instance, has a 255 LF, while Butterfree's is only 45. It is multiplied or added to by the type of Pokeball. Standard Pokeballs give no modifications. Great Balls multiply LF by 1.5, and Ultra Balls multiply it by 2. The various special balls you get from Gantetsu have their own modifiers, and the Master Ball, of course, skips this process entirely.

Whether this holds true for R/B/Y, I have no idea whatsoever. But it's probably a very good starting point for those with the time and inclination to research...

I've got some suspicions about that formula. If I am reading it right, it says that the pokemon's level doesn't matter. So capturing a L100 Caterpie at full health is just as hard as a L2 Caterpie at full health. My experience goes against this, but maybe I am wrong.

Also, I've been using moves like Sand-Attack to make pokemon easier to capture. Have I been wasting my time?

Well, I'll check through the site again to see if there's anything I missed, but I think this sounds right to me. (Though I've noticed I did make one mistake -- it's 'Rare Factor,' not 'Lure Factor.') Keep in mind that you add in the CF before dividing by Max HP. That alone gives you a substantial bonus towards catching low-level (i.e. low Max HP) Pokemon. Try plugging in actual numbers and you'll find it seems to give consistent results, I think.

When I've got a moment, I plan to search that site more -- there's other useful information there, such as a rather complex page on breeding that I'm not sure I'm reading right... there's some really odd implications if I am, though. More on that when I get through translating it.

So lets say that, for example, (This is all theoretical) that I encounter a level 2 Butterfree. Basing my calculations for max HP on Necrosaro's base stats for Butterfree, I find that it's max HP stat is 15. After putting the max HP stat into the formula you provided, (attempting capture with standard Pokèball, Butterfree at its max hp, and it's sleeping, and with the lure factor of 45) I get the following formula:

(((((4*15)-(2*15))*45)/15+10+1)/256

which equals: .39453125 or 39.453125% or in other words a low percentage of caputure happening.

Is this calculation correct?

This could be easier if someone would find a japanese to english translation site or if someone actually knows Japanese, or someone finds a Jap site with an accurate english translation. To me, some of these things that you talk about is not too valid. If the formulas for J-RBYG is the same for english RBY, then I would be convinced. However, I do find some of this stuff cool. It's just I'm not convinced yet.
