I got an HDTV, which is an incredibly thoughtful and generous gift, but now I have to rethink all the rest of my television plumbing and it makes my head hurt and I want to cry and I don't want to upgrade my 10-year-old hardware and...holy shit does Katamari look good, OMG, I can tell what even the tiniest of objects are supposed to be and yay yay yay Satan Claws!

dude it's pretty easy
lego-brick assemble a new-ish PC. plug it into the TV. watch Hulu on it if you abide by the law and steal everything from usenet if you don't
also you should probably play some TF2 :v

Aside from the fact that I don't want to fuck around with that krap just to watch teevee, isn't Hulu missing most of what I wanna see?
Also I don't want pull-content, I want it all waiting there for me without thought on my own.
I think I'm going to go with one of Dish's HD plans and get their DVR. Sticking with TiVo would require going back to my cable company, and that's not going to happen.
TiVo has also started going the way of Mozilla et al lately and concentrating on bullshit like ordering pizza through your teevee, instead watching teevee on your teevee.
All these scrappy little companies start off with a simple product that makes life easier and then bloat their way into obsolescence, until the next scrappy little guys come along and remind people that what they really want is simplicity that Just Fucking Works.

Yeah I guess I forgot your media consumption habits, I remember talking to you about TiVo way back whenever. You could always pop in a capture card and use whatever DVR-like Windows software they're shilling these days, but that's fucking effort and I can respect not wanting to be hassled with it. You probably watch enough silly random shit that Hulu and 'mainstream' piracy wouldn't be a really suitable substitution.
My folks are still paying Colorado's dickhead cable company, so I stashed a Slingbox on a spare outlet in their basement for the rare situations when we need network TV access. I hate most fringe programming and sports but I'm inexplicably addicted to NBA basketball and they don't give you a good fucking way to cut the cableco out of the picture and just hand the NBA guys a little bit of money. NBATV is allegedly solid and worth the cash, but they black out your home team's games. thanks, dicks, now I really want to pay you
We watch as much stuff on Hulu as possible, and pirate the rest of our shows. Netflix is looking pretty awesome, and as soon as they start offering blu-ray fidelity equivalent shit digitally/immediately/for-everything, we'll probably start paying them too. In the meantime, theft is the name of the game
seriously though, a PC runs pretty nice at 1080p. all current Valve titles support 16:9, get you some wireless mouse/keyboard/headset action aww yeah

I ended up buying an X-Box 360 with Christmas gift certs because literally ALL of my high school friends now have them and they play all the time.
So I now play Halo 3 for social reasons.
