After my fiasco with trying to get an Action Replay specifically to save games to my PC, then finding that it doesn't save games at all, I could use some help. What should I be looking for to save gba to my pc? I have several goals:
Backup. I'd like to back up my games in case I lose the cartridge, etc.
IV determination. Figuring out my pokemons' IVs in Fire Red is killing me! I'm hoping to develop a tool to look at my save files and determine my pokemons' IVs.
Finally, I'd be interested in something similar for GBC, for the above reasons, and possibly to work out a tool to transfer G/S/C pokemon to R/S/FR/LG.

You mean like a flash cart?

This site has some okay information; I've been out of the loop since buying one.

Thanks, Magician Type 0, but I don't think that's what I need. Flash carts seem to be for copying game ROMS to a new cartridge, hopefully to back up your game (although I bet a lot of purchasers use it to make illegal copies of borrowed or rented games). All I want to do is save the writeable portion of my game to my PC, both as a back up, and to allow examination of the data. If I have my save file backed up, and something happens to the cartridge, I can always get a new copy of the game and restore the save file. [ 12-03-2004, 05:27 PM: Message edited by: Bugcatcher Ed ]

I didn't have a problem doing copying game saves to my computer with the Action Replay GBA. What was the "fiasco" you speak of?

Older Gamesharks had a PC save feature, but I don't think they make those anymore.

Hi White Cat,
After talking to people on this forum, I bought an AR for GBA. There does not appear to be any way to even connect it to a PC. It has a place to plug into a GBA, a place to put in a game cartridge, a black button on the end, and a place on the end that can be pried off to reveal a small black switch. That's it. All it appears to be capable of doing is codes, which I don't care about. At the time, I assumed that there was more than one kind of AR for GBA. In the topic that led me to buy one, "Action replay to read R/S IVs?", MK suggested posting a detailed description of the box. I did so on 10/25. There have been no further posts on the topic.

The box for the one I have says on the back:
"Includes link cable and software - download new cheat codes and games saves via the internet" "This pack includes: An Action Replay Cheat Cartridge, PC Link Cable, and a PC Data Disc".

Thanks, MK! So, yours looks like mine, except that it has a port on one side. I tried to locate one like that, but my local stores were out of ARs for GBA altogether. I have, however, acquired a Gameshark that has, or is supposed to have, the capability to save games onto PCs. I'm hoping the save file formats will be similar, as a straight dump seems like the easiest way to do it. Can anyone point me to a url that would have basic info, like what the codes are for the character set in R/S/FR/LG, and what format the trainer ID is stored in? Once I've saved my games, my first goal will be to locate the obvious/unencrypted stuff in the file.

Bugcatcher Ed, go ahead and start exploring with a save file if you want:

I warn you, there's a good chance "nothing" is easily unencrypted...
