Make then inaccessible.

That's right, make it so that no one can obtain these Pokemon through normal means, not even through special machines (a la Mew).

So what's the point of them then?

1) Powerful final boss for Gameboy AND Stadium.
2) A reason to fear Nintendo reps, and give the reps a tactical advantage. They ARE supposed to be hard to beat after all. It also keeps a match from degenerating into a M2 vs M2 bout like in the days of old.

And I think Nintendo should emphasize that using this Pokemon in a link battle is illegal unless it's a tourney match and the user is a rep.

It keeps the concept of the "super legendary" while still giving them a reason to be cheap. They're the thing you're supposed to beat when you go to tourneys, but won't corrupt the metagame that happens among friends to the extent that Mewtwo and these days, teams having M2, Lugia, AND Houou have done. If you try to focus too much on a strategy that is guaranteed to wipe out these new super legendaries, then you run the risk of being taken out by a team that doesn't use them with relative ease.

And then, the reps would HAVE to admit to sharking.

Opponent: "Hey! How the hell did you get that Charcolt?"

Rep: "Um...beat the Elite 4 at least 17 times in one hour, then catch every Pokemon (you must use a Poke Ball). Then, after going to Cinnabar Island and Surfing until you drown, wait exactly 500 days after that, and you'll fight Charcolt!"

Yeah, right.

I think he was referring to Mewtwo, Ho-Oh and Lugia....

I like the idea.

It never made any sense that a whole bunch of people had Mewtwos or that a dumb little kid in a cap could capture Mewtwo.

I mean, it does make sense that Mewtwo is friggin' unstoppable, it just doesn't make sense that when 2 kids meet on the street, they both whip theirs out.

One problem with this, though, is that Mewtwo, Lugia and Ho-oh are already in circulation. To cut them out in the next game would lose alot of newbies from ever playing the thing...and newbies are sales....so, if they did do something like this, it'd be to any new super-legendaries they added...which could be really beefy in stats and moves, so they actually are hard to beat...and, the current super-legendaries could be decreased in power with stat tweaks or move tweaks or adding in more counters to them...

Maybe they could do this for PKMN Advance.

Like for the new Ubers, and you have to see them to get a pokedex entry. So, to have a complete Dex, you would have to go to Tournies.

Actually, I was thinking of making these new super legendaries the final opponent in the game. They would appear together as one team, and they couldn't be captured.

Also, they would be at level 100, so this would give your level 100 team something to aspire to once it reaches that point.

Idf. I remember posting somewhere else that I wanted Latio/Latia to be inaccessible, to the point where they won't even get a listing in your Dex if you see them.

I can just imagine the rumours that would spring up if they released such a game.

- - - - -
Mew:A mythical Pokemon of South America which had been thought extinct. When viewed through a microscope this Pokemon's short fine delicate hair is seen. So rare it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. A growing number of people have seen it recently. It's DNA is said to contain the genetic codes of all Pokemon, so it can use all kinds of techniques. Apparently, it only appears to those people who are pure of heart and have strong desire to see it. Mew has only been seen in captivity a few times. As a result, Mew is extremely sought after by collectors.

Such as How to actually get the ungettable ones?

Better idea on removing M2/Etc, is to make a game without their codes in it; It'll be like getting Marrill in Red/Blue all over again, but it won't exist, either way!

Part of what made me irritated and what let me down with RuSa, was the fact that more than one pokémon were inaccessible, together with a bunch of items such as berries, unless you got the right e-cards, saw Mirage Island or visited events and stuff. It was just too much, and I saw no point in playing a game I couldn't finish completely. (Many of the events and e-cards aren't available here in Sweden)

I can understand the reasoning behind "it seems strange that a kid in a cap can capture mewtwo", but you have to see it from the one-player perspective: You are on a quest to become the pokémon Master. This includes catching all pokémon, and finding all items. When I had captured all 150 Pokémon in RBY, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I was the Master.

One could bring in Mew in this. I had nothing against Mew. Mew was a cool surprise, Celebi was more of the same, but the compatibility between RBY and GSC made it quite possible to get both Mew and Celebi.

Now, the game is a clutter of items required to get these super-legendaries, and you can't catch this pokémon, and you need to finish this GC game on ultra hard to get this one, and this you can't even get, and that one changes appearance in every game etc.

I may be wrong, perhaps you can get every Pokémon now without special cards or visiting events, but my coonfusion is proof of how... confusing... it is.

It's not that confusing.

  • You have Ru/Sa which has the newest Pokémon, and some classics from R/B/Y and G/S/C.
  • FR/LG has all of the 150 original R/B/Y Pokémon and most of the G/S/C Pokémon that weren't already in Ru/Sa.
  • Colosseum has the rest of the G/S/C Pokémon (i.e. the starters and some of the rarer ones) that aren't in the GBA games except for Lugia.
  • The Japanese had a special Gamecube promo disc that allowed you to get Celebi.
  • The only Pokémon you need an item for (a ship ticket) are Deoxys, Mew, and Lugia (Nintendo promotional only).
  • If you got the Colosseum Pre-Order disc, you got Jirachi.
  • And finally, there's the Eon Ticket e-Card which allowed you to get Latios or Latias in Ru/Sa depending on which one was not readily catchable in your game.

The super-duper legendaries are still promos like before (Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys). You can't catch Celebi (unless you live in Japan). The Ho-Oh challenge is just plain tedious, not necessarily hard. Deoxys just has a special trait that gives it different forms/stats in a specific version - much like Castform has different forms in different weather conditions.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. It wasn't as bad as I thought, though I still think that too much of the game is kept from the player, like the berries, and 4 promo pokémon (the Jirachi preorder deal wasn't available here).

Well, really only the first few berries are the ones that matter. The rest are just for building PokéBlocks and those are just for Contest stat building. Personally, I'm not into the Contests. I'm more into breeding/raising a team for battling. The drawback is that there's really nobody up here to battle with. But it's fun to build a team.

Anyway, the Berries are really for Contest people. It's a novel concept but Contests aren't my bag.

Pokémon Channel, OK, thanks. I vaguely remembered something about a pokémon being available through that game, but not which one, or if it was a legendary.

Ferquin, thanks for clearing another thing up for me - what contests and Pokéblocks do. I thought they might affect battle stats or something, but if they're just for show, I don't need to care about them.

That's a relief. It's pretty clear now, and it seems not at all infeasible to go and play through the game now.

The Contests were a novel idea, it gave that sort of a dog show aspect to raising monsters. But I think it's more fun to battle.

The only Pokémon that's really affected by this is Milotic. You have to raise it's Beauty stat to the max for it to evolve. And that's if you can even find a Feebas in the first place. But again, that's like 2 Pokémon out of 386. Believe me, you've got a long way to go if you want to complete your dex all the way.
