My parents have given me an ultimatum: I need to choose which college I will be attending in the fall by tomorrow, or they will not help pay for my tuition, room, and board. If you had a choice, which of these would you attend?
[EDIT] By "help pay for my expenses," I do not mean that my parents will pay for everything. They have committed about $9000 a year to attend which ever one I choose. I have figured out the debt I would incur attending each university for four years:
UF: $0 Valpo: $0 Vandy: $38000 Duke: $113000 [ 04-19-2004, 06:21 AM: Message edited by: JohtoMaster ]

Your parents would pay Duke tuition for you?
Assuming things are well-off and you don't feel guilty making your parents pay $40,000 a year...DO IT, STUPID.
Myself, I automatically choose University of Florida. I mean, you got a fucking full scholarship. I'd take it.
Edit: or Valparaiso if that sort of thing floats your boat. [ 04-18-2004, 09:39 PM: Message edited by: Bulbasaur3000 ]

Well, I had to vote for UF. I think you'll get a great education here.
Plus, the chicks here are HOT.
Hottest in the land.
(I'm not talking about me, in case you were worried. I was referring to the enormous population of hot chicks.)
I'm sorry, did I not stress enough the sheer number of beautiful women that attend this fine university?
Oh yeah, and GO GATORS.

Don't waste your time, life does not wait for you.
Pick UF. Hot chicks and a full ride scholarship. If you become a total failure you won't feel bad about all the money you wasted.

voted Duke
trust me on this one, I go to NYU, which is even more expensive than Duke, and get no aid, however the quality of education makes it worth every penny. i would much rather be here than anywhere else in the world.

i wouldn't let a full ride go too easily either.
UF looks like your best choice here, but then again Duke is a nice school too...
but if you earned a full ride, i think that's a clear sign that the school wants you more than Duke
you got a lot of nice choices though, good luck.

Well, that's probably the case for Valparaiso, but for UF, it's probably all paid for with a Bright Futures scholarship and National Merit aid, not because UF wants him.
Wait, I take that back. UF does heavily recruit National Merit finalists.
I think Duke is an excellent option to consider, but that's really expensive. I wouldn't go there unless I got some type of non-loan aid.

Also Duke gave him no aid because they don't give anyone merit based aid.

Yeah, but there's federal and other outside aid that he could get, but maybe his parents make too much money to qualify for it, but not enough money to pay Duke tuition.

This is exactly my problem. My dad makes around $100,000 a year. This means I qualify for about $10000 in student loans at Duke, but it would take half of my father's salery (before taxes) to send me to Duke for a year. I just cannot understand how Duke expects families like mine to pay for their institution without some form of merit or financial grant aid. It seems that you either have to be really poor or really rich to attend Duke, and the middle class just seems to get shafted.

Loans. You pay them two months after you finish college. So you either become successful and pay them off with no problem or become a failure and go into endless debt.
You sure there is no other engineering school you can go to? If you really think you will have a good career then go with the best college possible.

Well, I know everyone here thinks he's a tool now, but cfalcon is living proof that you can go to a great engineering school, get a master's degree and get a pretty damn good paying job without ever having to get a loan.
So I say, why dig yourself that hole by deciding to go to Duke, just because it's Duke?

That is pretty much the decision that I have reached at this point. I have narrowed my choice down to either Vanderbilt or Valparaiso (No offense to the UF people, but that school is just way too big for me, and the honors program is a fucking joke). Now I just have to decide whether taking out some money in loans will give me a better experience over the next four years, or will I have the same experience no matter where I go...
PS. Just exactly how much does OLDNBLD make these days?

I have to agree. People in the real world don't care where you went to college, as long as it's a reasonable 4-year school. Most people won't even know where you went.
At which school would you be most comfortable?

Yeah, that's a good point. I think if you graduate from a school with a higher reputation than a state school (say Harvard Law vs Maryland or whatever) you may start out higher initially, but over time it doesn't make any difference as long as you prove yourself (although I guess if you join some arcane Skull and Bones-esque society you could be set).
My mom and dad both went to the University of Kentucky and Florida, and we're really well off, and my mom hardly works.
Don't go to Vandy. Who the fuck wants to live in Tennesse? Florida bitches! [ 04-20-2004, 07:12 AM: Message edited by: The Muffin King ]

Thanks for all of you who shed your insight on my situation. Since I have since narrowed my decision down to either Vanderbilt or Valparaiso, I will probably start up another poll soon. But again, thanks for everyone who took the time to contribute their two cents.
Also, what does everybody seem to have against Tennessee?

Well, I have decided to go to Valparaiso. A free education was just too much to pass up, and it will help me save up some money for grad school. Thanks to everyone who offered their advice (especially pkthunder), it really helped in this decision. And thanks to Dweedle and Random Loser, who took to time to make parodys of my first ever topic. It's every lurkers wet dream.
