Which would you rather have? A political puppet, who does everything the majority of the people tell him too, or a highly qualified leader who listens to the people only when he thinks they are right.

The former would be the result of a truly democratic system, representative yet open to tyranny by majority. The latter would be the more expedient but may result in corruption from power of said leader.

It seems pretty clear that a compromise between the two should be sought.

That sure is phrased objectively. How about a leader in tune with the desires of his nation or an impulsive egoist who rules at his whim?

One problem is that we aren't given the same sort of information that the President is. We don't get all those defense briefings. It's his job to handle that sort of thing. We see him make decisions based on the limited information we have, and we judge based on that. So, the question of following the majority is silly - the majority doesn't know everything, and therefore cannot possibly make well informed decisions. We have to elect someone that we have confidence will make the correct decisions. Obviously, this is a problem with democracy... public opinion matters even when it shouldn't.

That said, one thing is clear to me - Bush is an idiot.

Eh, cracks knuckles...

Ok here we go, politics is fun, but I want a puppet who listens to the people because if we dont have that then:

A)we will be like Europe which is skanky(my opinion), and unnaceptable society types will take over all public areas

B)Our country would have socialized medicine, my God, I will start a revolution against the government if that happens, I will never pay 60% of my income for that

C)Politicians could get by with whatever they want

and Zem, I respect your opinion, I disagree though, however I do think that there are stronger Republicans than Bush that my party could have had for president...

Ah, see, there you go trying to bait me. I made a very quick comment about the public's lack of information due to the interest of national security, and you think you know my grasp of politics.

But, as I've mentioned, I've already determined you're an idiot, so I'm ok with your having a negative opinion of me.

Now did I go and tell you to "fuck off"? No. Certainly the thought crossed my mind, but being a relatively decent fellow, I decided that wouldn't be very nice. See how that works?

Oh, I'm sorry, I've gone on for several lines now. I'd better stop, I wouldn't want to overly tax your brain.

Actually I have quite a firm grasp of politics. I am into it so much, that I can name lots of senators and some representatives and I can explain all of Bush's policies(in anything) as well as what positions each of the Democratic candidates who are facing Bush are taking. I can also explain to you the foreign policies of presidents Truman-Bush2.

Joe Lieberman is by far the best and most centrist of the democrats running for president although scary cause he might end up outlawing video games. I believe that in the national election, only he, has a very slim possibility of ousting Bush.
Domestic: supports school vouchers, tax cuts for middle class and poor, no gay marriage or union however gay rights, faith-based programs supporter, cracked down on entertainment violence and porn with several bills, doesnt think socialized meds is good but wants a step by step program with government healthcare and regulation on the industry, wants to support businesses who create manufacturing jobs
Foreign:moderate foreign policy bush supporter, only candidate who has criticized the other candidates about being ambivalent or anti-iraq war, believes that administration is doing a terrible job in postwar iraq, and thinks that the us should go alone in certain areas of foreign policy but wishes for world support, very strong on defense compared to other candidates

Lieberman is basically a Republican. I would link to Doonesbury cartoon about it, but the cartoon isn't actually funny, and I don't wanna be a cfalcon.

I would like to vote for Dean's hype, but not that guy who wouldn't give a straight answer about anything on Larry King and said that he "had never thought about" the issue of gay marriage. If Dean's testicles descend, I might actually vote for him. Otherwise, I'll just throw my vote away again (altho, as 'mute has pointed out, my vote never counts anyway).

Altho, I have never voted for a winner before, so if I wanted to keep the streak intact, I think Dean is a safe bet.

I am almost positive that Howard Dean will be the Democratic candidate (unless Gore runs, which is a possibility even though he denied it or Lieberman picks up steam). But with Dean as a candidate who is antiwar, proGayunion, and prosocialized meds, Bush will probably end up winning in a Nixon/McGovern landslide. That is why I endorse Howard Dean...
