Hay guys I still only have one vote (my own). Did I mention I got a 5 on the AP Stats test? Also did I mention that I had a 3.98 GPA in high school? Also I got accepted early decision into New York University (very good school). Plus, I can juggle for about 5 seconds straight without dropping too many balls*.

If you think I'm the smartest, please give your vote, then, to cfalcon. He's smarter than me, I know it. He used to floor me with his intelligence sometimes. There are 44 people on this forum who are wrong or just smart-asses cause cfalcon is the smartest person about everything. Except spelling. And adding five and eight. But he has dictionaries and calculators and uses them when it counts. He is extremely intelligent, and has the ego to back it up.

Dweedle I wanted to support your balls but I'm sorry I already voted for MK because he's super-intelligent.
It amazes me that we can get this far across two threads and no one has raised the general topic of what we mean by intelligence and how we assess it. I think the most interesting usage is descriptive not of a particular display of behavior, but of the capacity (in some sense) for such displays. So if I can dazzle you by, say, putting together a complex machine, or composing an insightful poem, you might conclude merely that I've learned to do those particular things well, not that I'm necessarily intelligent. But if I learn to do a variety of such things more quickly than most, perhaps because I generalize well from one task to another, that suggests the usage of intelligence I'm thinking of. Perhaps also that at those skills, I can achieve an above-average level of sophistication. Of course there are many other usages.
A couple of people in the other thread mentioned debating, which makes sense, because what else do we see each other doing here? But of course that's a single skill domain, and we encompass a wide range of training and experience at it. In my estimation cfalcon is a very, very, clever raptor - moreso than his skill in debate threads indicates. K and White Cat (though here I'm working from a smaller sample) greatly impress me in that regard, probably moreso. On the other hand I sure as hell wouldn't want to sit down and do head-to-head math problems with the birdman.
I'm comfortable with my verbal ability, but I'm older than the average poster, and I've been a graduate student for a while now. My undergrad major was philosophy.
Lots of people here strike me as having nimble noodles, basically in terms of being able to skillfully articulate sensible things that are responsive to the context. Rolken, pk, bro, Lunair, gruco, PowerAngelic, Automaton, etc, just off the top of my head and there are certainly others, most of whom I'm sure are the type of person who knows who they are anyway, and don't need to see the results of some poll. And there are people who aren't much for debate or even discussion threads but who are clever and witty as hell, and they know who they are, too.

If you could come up with the right answer, but you don't, what does that mean?
As I see it, it's like putting an inhibitor on a fancy Italian sports car and then asking "how fast can it go?".
Well, if it can't really go 200mph with the inhibitor on, then it can't really go 200mph. It's not that "fast".
However, I don't believe what we're trying to measure here (to the extent that a popularity contest measures intelligence, of course) is that sort of hidden quality which could very well make MK a genius, despite all the evidence of his inability to learn simple Pavlovian lessons here.
If we are, then we might as well try to guess each others' astrological signs.

I hate to say it, but I think it really depends on what you mean by intelligent. I mentioned finding the "inherent capacity, not any given display" usage interesting, but in day-to-day thinking I'm much inclined to nix the fictional internal representation. I'm comfortable applying the adjective "intelligent" to a person in direct proportion to the extent to which they show "intelligent" behavior. (Where intelligent behavior might be defined as successful behavior of certain kinds...) So yeah, I'd be quite comfortable saying, hey, if your car don't go that fast, she don't go. Excuses are like assholes, etc.
I too seized on that line from cfalcon, because I find the interplay between arrogance and intelligence fascinating. My own inclination is towards the "empty your cup so that it may be filled", or, "wisdom consists of knowing that you know nothing" school. I've seen too many people who think they know when they don't, and I believe that sometimes they end up there by nursing masturbatory, "I'm right and I know it" thoughts. We all experience them, but I believe in trying to be vigilant against them. (Not to mention that people like that are amazingly unpleasant to be around.) And yet, sometimes confidence carries the day, intelligent behavior-wise. When does questioning everything degenerate into second-guessing yourself? Arrogance can also be a terrific form of motivation - when you come off as a know-it-all, you're likely to make pretty damn sure that you know it all.
But it's funny that we're so inclined to think that the car can "really" go 200. Maybe because there IS in fact a phylogenic component of intelligent behavior, and we know that some cars will simply never go 200, while others might if they would only take off the inhibitor.
