Mass in General Relativity

Friday, October 12th, 2018, 5:00pm
Ungar Building Room 402

In classical physics the concept of mass is well known. However,
generalizing this concept to general relativity is problematic, since this
theory does not give a single definition of the term mass, but offers
instead several different definitions that are applicable under different
circumstances. In this talk I will first give an overview of special and
general relativity and then present some definitions of mass in specific
cases, like the ADM mass for asymptotically flat manifolds or Bartnik’s
quasi local mass.
