Course Description: We will
study the theory and applications of ordinary differential equations
(ODE): first-order ODE, linear ODE, obtaining solutions of ODE as series,
the Laplace transform.
Text: Differential
Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 4th Edition, Edwards and Penney
Content: We will cover sections 1.1-1.5, 2.1-2.3, much of
chapters 3 and 7, parts of 4,5,6.
Exams:
There will be three exams and an
optional final.
- Exam I: Thursday February 7th
- Exam II: Thursday March 7th
- Exam III: Thursday April 18th
- Final: Tuesday May 7th, 8am - 10:30am
You will be responsible for the material covered in the lectures, the
readings, and the homework.
If you have a conflict with any of these dates contact me as soon as
possible and prior to the exam.
The three exams will each count 25%.
If you elect to take the final, one exam will count 10%, two
exams will count 20%, and the final will count 25%.
Homeworks:
Homework will be assigned
here
and will be due at the beginning of class on (non-exam) Thursdays.
No late homework will be accepted. Your lowest homework grade will be
dropped. Write your solutions neatly and show your work.
Staple your homework!
Homework (and any in-class work) counts 25%.
Working together:
You are strongly encouraged to work on the homeworks and study for the
exams with others. Every assignment however is to be the
product of your own work. For example, a small group of classmates
may together work out a difficult proof. When it comes time to write
up the solution, each student should write up their solution in his/her
own hand finalizing the organization of the proof independently.
Exams must be done independently.
Academic Honesty:
Each student will uphold the University of Miami
Honor
Code. As a succinct reminder, each student will write out and
sign the pledge on each exam:
-
UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI HONOR
PLEDGE
-
I have neither given nor
received unauthorized aid on this piece of work, and I understand
and will uphold the ideals of academic honesty as stated in the
Honor Code.
Grades:
Course grades will follow standard cutoffs A >90, B>80, C
>70. If it is adjusted, it will be in your favor.
