Lectures: MWF 1:25-2:15P Memorial Room 203 Office Hours: Monday/Friday 10am-11am and by appointment. Math Lab Hours: Monday/Friday 11am-12pm Text:Algebra & Trigonometry 8th Edition by Sullivan (ISBN: 0-13-232903-4) Website: http://www.math.miami.edu/~harper/Math108F-Fall09.html
We will aim to cover most of the material from chapters 7-11 in the text. Some topics may be omitted and others may be taken further than presented in the text. If there is time we will go into some topics from chapters other than 7-11.
Homeworks: Homework will generally be assigned in-class after finishing a section. Also, homework assignments will be posted at http://www.math.miami.edu/~harper/108F-Fall09-HWK.html. Homeworks will not not be collected or graded, however, to compensate we will have a quiz every week that covers the previous week's homework assignment. Quizzes: Quizzes will typically be 2-4 problems. Some problems will be similiar to, or exactly, from the previous homework assignment. Other problems will come directly from the notes that we cover in class. There will be no make-up quizzes, but the 2 lowest quizzes will be dropped. Exams: There will be 3 exams given in class and a final, for a total of 4 exams. Exam dates will be given in class with at least a weeks notice. The in-class exams will not be cumulative, but the material covered in class will build on itself. The final is cumulative and will be held on Monday, Dec. 14th, from 11am to 1:30pm. A make-up exam will only be given if sufficient written proof is given for missing the original exam. Calculators: Calculators will generally not be allowed on quizzes or exams. Occasionally we may have problems that require a scientific calculator. I will announce beforehand if a calculator will be needed on a quiz or exam. No graphing calcuators will be allowed.
Attending class is mandatory. Students are responsible for the material taught in lecture. Students will be tested on the material covered during class and their homework assignments.
Participation is highly encouraged. The more questions asked in class the better for everyone. Furthermore, it is recommended attending office hours and the math lab to get assistance on homework problems.
The Math Lab is held in the University Center on the second floor in the Academic Resource Center (UC N201). It is open Monday - Thursday from 11am-6pm, and on Friday 11am-2pm There you can get help from math graduate students or upper class undergraduate math majors on your homework assignments.
Your final score will be broken down as follows:
On each exam students must also sign the Honor Pledge: "I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this piece of work, and I understand and will uphold the ideals of academic honesty as stated in the Honor Code."
