Walks on Edge-Weighted Graphs

Abstract:

The transfer-matrix method uses linear algebra to analyze walks in graphs with weighted edges.  The underlying theory is relatively simple, but the method has a wide range of applications.  In this talk, we will discuss the powerful theorems behind the transfer-matrix method and apply them to a few simple examples.  If time permits, I will also discuss how this method was used to prove a result in a paper of Richard Stanley on chromatic symmetric functions and how I was able to generalize his result to my own work on chromatic quasisymmetric functions of directed graphs.
