A Glimpse of Matroid Theory

Friday, March 3, 2017, 5:00pm
Ungar Building Room 402

Abstract:

Matroids are combinatorial gadgets that aim to capture the notion of (linear) independence in mathematics. We will aim to give an idea of what matroids are and how their combinatorial structure is a surprisingly powerful tool to construct interesting objects and do computations in algebra, geometry and topology. We will focus on Grassmannians and hyperplane arrangements.
