Geometry in Classical Mechanics

Friday, September 10, 2010, 2:30pm
Ungar Building Room 411

Abstract:My aim is to introduce some of the ideas one learns as an undergraduate physics major in the language one learns as a graduate student in math. We will make use of both perspectives to become familiar with the rigorous as well as the heuristic aspects. We begin by deriving the Euler-Lagrange equations. Then we will make the passage from Lagrangian to Hamiltonian Mechanics and describe how the equations of motion can be expressed naturally using the symplectic structure of phase space.
