A Survey of Mathematical Models of Biological Systems

Friday, October 1, 2010, 2:30pm
Ungar Building Room 402

Abstract:It is well known that mathematics can be used to understand physical systems. But it is less well known that mathematics can be used to understand biological systems. My aim in this talk is to give a non-technical survey of mathematical models which are used to study various biological systems and describe how slight changes in the biological assumptions are incorporated into these models. I will primarily focus on population models, which will lead into my research, and will also briefly discuss epidemiological and physiological models.
