The preliminary exam is taken by all incoming mathematics graduate students just prior to the start of the fall
semester (generally in late August).
The exam serves as a placement exam to help determine whether students should begin with 500-level courses or with
600-level courses (or with a mixture). However, passing the preliminary exam is a requirement for each of the graduate
degrees in mathematics to ensure that those who receive graduate degrees have a solid mathematical foundation.
The exam is given once in August and once in May each year.
Those pursuing a Ph.D or a D.A. are given one year to pass this exam. Those pursuing a Master's Degree are given
two years to pass this exam.
The following syllabi are intended as a rough guide. The actual contents of the exam are determined by the
qualifier committee.
